Hand sanitizer had become a life saver during the Corona period, new research revealed, it is dangerous for the brain.

Since the days of the pandemic, when the fear of coronavirus had crept in people’s minds, hand sanitizer had become not only a necessity but also a tool to fight the virus and save lives. The use and sale of hand sanitizer had increased at that time. But even today the habit of its use persists. But a new study has found that use of sanitizer can harm brain cells. For the first time, such results have been seen in any study.

This study was done on the basis of human cell culture and rats. It was found that chemicals present in common household disinfectants such as furniture, clothing, disinfectants and glue can damage the supporting cells present in the brain. This is more common during critical stages of organ development.

Molecular biologist Erin Cohn of Case Western Reserve University in Ohio and her colleagues looked at 1823 substances of unknown toxicity. During this time, he discovered two types of chemicals, which either kill or stop the maturation of cells called oligodendrocytes in laboratory conditions.

Oligodendrocytes are a type of nerve supporting cells that wrap around the nerves and form an insulating sheath. This ensures that brain signals are moving at a faster pace.

The researchers identified one of the two chemical classes as quaternary compounds, which are used in wipes, hand sanitizers, disinfectant sprays, and personal care products like toothpaste and mouthwash to kill bacteria and viruses. People, when using these products, may swallow or inhale the chemicals.

The second chemical class was organophosphate. These chemicals work as flame retardants. These are commonly found in clothing, glue, and household items such as electronics and furniture. Humans can absorb fat-soluble organophosphates through the skin which can reach the brain. The researchers found that oligodendrocytes are surprisingly vulnerable to ammonium compounds and organophosphate flame retardants, but this is not the case with other brain cells.
