Many years ago, in an interview, Ismail Darbar narrated the story of working as a music director in the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999). Ismail Darbar said, ‘It was around 1997, I was struggling a lot in those days. I had written a song which no one could understand. Those who listened to it would advise me that this song is long, slow and tiring, so don’t sing it.’
Smile Darbar further said, ‘Someone used to even suggest changes in my songs. By chance I met Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He heard me sing and he listened to this song 3 times continuously. After this he went away and did not say anything for 6 months. Then one day I got a call and he called me to his office.’
Smile Darbar further said, ‘By then I had written another song named ‘Tadap-Tadap’. Sanjay called KK in the office and made him listen to my song in his voice. I thought this too was going to get rejected so I kept sitting. Sanjay listened to that song 9 times continuously and when I turned to see him, he was crying. Sanjay ji liked me a lot and without any delay he signed me for the film. After this I also composed the music for the film Devdas.’

Ismail Darbar started his career as a music director with the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. He received the National Film Award for Best Music Director for the music in this film. Before this, Ismail Darbar used to play violin with many music directors. But gradually he made a special place in the industry.
Ismail Darbar married Farzana Javed Sheikh and they had a son named Zaid Darbar in 1995. Zaid married actress Gauhar Khan who is 12 years older than him. Gauhar and Zaid have a son.
