Kumar Sanu married a girl named Rita in 1980 and had three children named Jiko, Jassi and Jaan. They got divorced in 1994 and later Kumar Sanu married Saloni, with whom he has two daughters.

In 1983, Kumar Sanu started his singing career with Bengali songs. In 1986, he sang in a Bangladeshi film Teen Kanya. His first Bollywood film with songs was Hero Hiralal (1988). In 1989, Ghazal Samrat Jagjit Singh introduced Kumar Sanu to Kalyanji. It was Kalyanji who suggested Sanu Bhattacharya to name him Kumar Sanu because his idol was Kishore Kumar.

He got a chance to sing in the film Jaadugar (1989) in Kalyan-Anandji’s composition.
