In 1950, Purushottam Joshi, a resident of Maharashtra, came to Indore in search of employment, where his aunt lived. He liked Indore so much that he stayed here. He was the first to make Indoreis taste the taste of poha. Opened a shop named Uphaar Grih on Tilak Path, before that there was no other shop selling Poha in Indore. Then poha was available at the rate of 10 to 12 paise per plate, which has now reached 15 to 25 rupees.

Poha is consumed 100 tons daily
More than 100 tonnes of poha are consumed daily in Indore. Which is a record in itself. But the Poha culture started in Indore today all over India. It would not be wrong to say that it is the first choice of people of every class. It cannot happen that one who eats Poha of Indore once and does not praise it. When people go on a foreign tour, they pack Indore’s poha and take it because they don’t get such taste anywhere.

Poha is known by many names
World Poha Day is celebrated in Indore on 7th June. The celebration of this day was started by Indori artist Rajeev Nema. Poha is known by different names in different states. In Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra it is known as Poha, while some call it beaten rice and flattened rice. It is also known as Chida in Bengal, Assam, Atukulu in Telugu, Paua in Gujarati.
