According to the mythological tale, once Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva that due to the virtue of which fast, penance or donation did I get you as my husband? On this Lord Shiva said, O Parvati ji! You had performed penance in your childhood at the same place on the Himalayas and did penance by staying in water for twelve months and entering fire in the month of Baishakh.
In the month of Saavan, you stayed in the open and abstained from food and kept on performing penance. Seeing your suffering, father Himalaya Raj was very worried. He was worried about your marriage. One day Naradji came there and Devrishi Narad saw you i.e. Shailputri.
Narad ji told King Himalaya that among the gods like Brahma, Indra, Shiva etc., no one is as great as Lord Vishnu, so according to me, you should donate your daughter to Lord Vishnu only. The king also accepted the proposal of getting a groom like Vishnu ji for his daughter. Himalaya said to Parvati ji happily – O daughter, I have offered you to Garudadhwaj Lord Vishnu.
On hearing her father’s words, Parvati went to her friend’s house in grief and fell on the ground and started crying bitterly. When her friends asked her, Parvati said that she wanted to marry Mahadevji, but her father had fixed her marriage with Vishnuji, so she would surely give up this body. On hearing these words of Parvati, her friends kidnapped her and took her to the forest so that Parvati’s father would not marry her to Lord Vishnu against her wishes.
On the advice of her friends in the forest, Parvati ji worshipped Lord Shiva in a cave. On the day of Bhadrapada Tritiya Shukla, in Hasta Nakshatra, Parvati ji made a Shivling from clay and duly worshipped it and stayed awake all night. O Goddess, due to the effect of your great fast, my seat started shaking, I was pleased with your penance and in the boon, you expressed your desire to marry me. Shiva also accepted Mother Parvati as his wife. That is why every year women observe this fast for unbroken good fortune.
