Ashish Kumar/West Champaran. Tharuhat area of West Champaran district is developing rapidly. Tribal women have developed an excellent marketing system in the village on their own, where they are providing employment to other women of the village by manufacturing and producing many types of things. At present, Tharu women of Bagaha-2 block of the district are making fish pickle and supplying it to many states of this country including neighboring country Nepal. The thing to note is that this process of making fish pickle was started during the Corona period, which is proving to be a boon after some struggle. Today, there is a huge demand for fish pickle made in Tharuhat in different states of the country.
Ramji Singh Mahato, resident of Majhaua village of Bagaha-2 block of the district, is a fish farmer. Before Corona, he had taken 21 days training in making fish pickle from Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. Meanwhile Corona arrived. During the pandemic, when the whole world remained confined to homes, the sale of fish also reduced significantly. In such a situation, taking advantage of fish farming, Ramji started making fish pickles. She also gave training to the women who cooperated in this work. Ramji says that only a few businessmen in entire Bihar make fish pickles.
Consumption of 7 quintal pickles every year
Ramji tells that dozens of women including his wife and daughter make pickles on earthen stove with a special technique, which is durable for a long time. It remains free from any kind of smell. The good thing is that Ramji has 8 ponds of his own, out of which fishing is done in 4. The sale of fish reduces on occasions like Sawan, Navratri, Pitripaksha. At such times they start the process of making fish pickles. He told that he makes 6 to 7 quintals of pickles every year.
Pickles are sold for Rs 1200 to Rs 1000 per kg.
Ramsingh Mahato says that pickles of Rohu, Katla, Chepua, Garai and other types of fish are made at his place. In this, the price of Rohu and Chepua pickles is Rs 1200 and Rs 1000 per kg respectively. Whereas the price of some fish pickles ranges from Rs 500 to Rs 900 per kg. This fish pickle is also sold by setting up stalls. Apart from this, orders are also received from UP, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
