Doctors said the 54-year-old man had complained of a hoarse voice, difficulty breathing and chronic cough. The Austrian patient claimed he was 20 when he started smoking in 1990. He also reported an incident of coughing out a hair during that time. Doctors decided to examine his throat by sending a small camera into his windpipe, where they saw several black hairs growing in the man’s throat. Doctors removed the hair from his mouth and also gave him antibiotics after bacteria was found in the hair. This gave the man temporary relief. This was in 2010. But his problem never ended. The hair kept coming back every year for the next 14 years. He was then treated for an extremely rare condition called endotracheal hair growth, or hair growing in the throat.

The doctors treating the man say that they cannot say for sure, but the growth of these hairs in the throat was probably due to his smoking habit. An article about this man’s disease was also published in the American Journal of Case Reports. Regarding the growth of hairs in the throat of this man, the doctors who came from Austria said that smoking can cause inflammation in the throat, due to which the cells can turn into hair follicles. In such a situation, whenever the doctors looked, six to nine two-inch hairs had grown in the throat of that man. Some hairs had also started getting stuck in his voice box and they would go upwards into his mouth.

The doctors said, “We guess that the hair growth started due to the patient’s smoking cigarettes. Due to this, perhaps the hair follicles inside the mouth started growing rapidly in the form of hair. But due to the rarity of such cases, this assumption cannot be proved”. After this, the doctors asked the person to give up the habit of smoking cigarettes. Then with great difficulty he gave up the habit of smoking cigarettes in the year 2020. Then the doctors burned the roots of the hair through endoscopic argon plasma. A year later, two hairs again grew in the throat, then the doctors again adopted the same procedure. Since then, hair has not grown in his throat till now. In this journal, the doctors have also mentioned an incident from the childhood of that person, in which it is told that due to drowning in water at the age of 10, the breathing tube was cut and opened so that he could breathe. Later it was closed. Hair had grown at the same place.
