1. Gastroenteritis
The most common disease of the rainy season is gastroenteritis. This disease is caused by contaminated food and water. Its symptoms include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting. Sudden onset of diarrhea, often watery, and accompanied by fever is a clear sign of intestinal infection. If not treated on time, this disease can also cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and kidney failure in severe cases.

2. Dengue
According to the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP), more than 1 lakh cases of dengue were reported in India in the year 2021. Dengue cases increase during the rainy season in India. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and skin rashes.

In severe cases, dengue can progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), which can cause severe bleeding, organ weakness, and in severe cases, even death. It is especially common for children and people with weakened immune systems to suffer the worst effects.

3. Malaria
Malaria spreads during the monsoon season in many parts of India. Its symptoms include recurrent high fever, chills, sweating, headache, nausea and muscle pain. Sudden rise in fever and flu-like symptoms, often with chills and shivering, are signs of malaria infection. If malaria is not treated in time, it can lead to severe anemia, respiratory problems, organ failure and in severe cases, cerebral malaria, which can lead to coma or even death.

4. Cholera
The monsoon season also brings on the risk of cholera. It causes sudden onset of diarrhoea, vomiting and severe dehydration. Sunken eyes, dry mouth and reduced urination are warning signs of cholera. Complications can worsen rapidly, leading to shock, electrolyte imbalance and, in severe cases, death within hours if left untreated.
