Recently a delegation from Japan was on a visit to AIIMS along with officials of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The visit is a continuation of cooperative efforts between the two countries begun a decade ago when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Had gone to Japan. There PM Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had issued a joint statement at their summit in Tokyo on 1 September 2014.

MoU between AIIMS and Japan University

After this summit, AIIMS and Osaka University of Japan signed an agreement (MoU) on 13 October 2014. The purpose of this agreement was to develop new and cheap surgical equipment. This is the first research cooperation between medical institutions of India and Japan.

During the recent visit, a high profile meeting was held under the chairmanship of Professor M. Srinivas, Director, AIIMS Delhi. The setting up of a national centre at AIIMS was discussed, which is a part of India’s “Make in India” initiative. The Japanese delegation was headed by Dr. Kiyokazu Nakajima, Professor, Department of Next Generation Endoscopic Interventions, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University.

In this meeting, technical aspects and proposals for setting up a modern and public financial research center for development, validation and skill training of medical equipment were discussed. The Japanese delegation also visited the proposed site for this center at AIIMS Delhi’s Jhajjar campus.

This new scheme is aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported surgical equipment, which is currently more than 70%. The centre hopes to provide a platform for Indian surgeons, medical practitioners and engineers to conceptualise, design, develop and test medical equipment prototypes. This will prove to be very important in the facility provided by Japan in the field of technology and knowledge transfer.

High quality surgical equipment will be easily available, especially in densely populated areas. Along with this, the effort to create and develop an ecosystem to promote small and medium-sized businesses for the development of medical and surgical equipment is also in line with the Make in India policy.
