health tips human papillomavirus infection hpv affect men fertility study

Male Fertility : HVP i.e. Human Papillomavirus can increase the risk of infertility in men. A study has claimed that HPV can cause low sperm quality and sperm count. Researchers at Universidad Nacional de Cordoba in Argentina said that men are very vulnerable to HPV infection. They have a very high risk of developing genital warts and dangerous diseases of the mouth, throat and anus. The biggest problem among these is impotence.

what is study

A study published in the journal Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology found that oxidative stress and impaired immune response can destroy sperm in men infected with high-risk HPV genotypes. University professor Dr. Virginia Rivera says that ‘this research has found that HPV infection is quite common in men.

Depending on the viral genotype causing the infection, it can have different effects on sperm quality. He said, ‘Male fertility and the immunity system to fight infection are more affected by high-risk HPV genotype infections. On the other hand, in cases of HPV infection in women, there is a risk of cervical cancer in 95% of cases.’

1 in 3 men is infected with HPV

According to a study published in The Lancet magazine, 1 in 3 men over the age of 15 are at least partially infected with HPV. At the same time, 1 in 5 men are partially infected with high-risk or oncogenic HPV strains. The new study was conducted on 205 men in Argentina, who visited a urology clinic between 2018 and 2021 for problems of urinary tract infection. None of them had taken the HPV vaccine. 29% of the people were found to be HPV positive. Of these, 20% men were found to have high-risk HPV and 7% were found to have low-risk HPV.

HPV may harm male fertility

According to regular semen analysis, there was no obvious difference in the quality of the semen between the groups. However, extra high resolution testing showed that the semen of men who were HR-HPV positive had significantly lower numbers of CD45+ white blood cells. “According to the study, oxidative stress in men infected with HR-HPV caused increased sperm degradation. The immune response in the urinary tract was weakened. This means that fertility in HR-HPV positive men can be completely affected,” Rivero said.
