FND And FHMD : 19-year-old Amy Lewis has functional neurological disorder (FND) and functional hyperkinetic movement disorder (FHMD). Recently, she had vomiting problem due to cold and suddenly she is not able to walk. Earlier she was quite healthy and fit. But in October 2022, at the age of 17, she suddenly experienced tremors and body twitching.
Now it has been found out that she is suffering from FND and FHMD, which is extremely rare. Due to this she is facing many problems. Here know how dangerous FND and FHMD are and what problems Amy Louise faced.
What are the problems caused by the disorder?
Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a condition that affects the brain’s ability to send and receive information. It also affects the rest of the body. On the other hand, functional hyperkinetic movement disorder (FHMD) causes unwanted activities. Due to both these disorders, Amy Louise started having problems of brain fog, muscle spasms, tics and tremors as well as seizures every day.
Many times, she used to face many problems during the day. Amy’s family says that when she first had this problem in 2022, they thought she was feeling cold but today the condition is such that their daughter has to take the help of a wheelchair. She is not even able to speak properly.
How to prevent neurological disorders
In the treatment of patients with functional disorders, doctors advise to get a complete checkup done without any haste. If a patient has a problem like headache or paralysis or if the hands and legs have become numb, then get a CT scan done, ECG should be done in case of chest pain, EEG in case of an epileptic seizure and NCV should be done in case of the leg not being able to move. Only after this can the treatment proceed.
Experts say that people all over the world are suffering from functional neurological disorders, but their number is very high in America. When a person has some kind of desire suppressed in his mind but due to some compulsion he is unable to do it, then he can suffer from this disease.
Mass hysteria: the mysterious counterpart to functional disorder
Hyperkinetic movement disorders are autoimmune disorders, often associated with other neurological and non-neurological symptoms. In addition, some conditions point to a specific cause.. such as anti-LGI, faciobrachial dystonic seizures in encephalitis.
This is why autoimmune work-up and brain MRI should always be done in patients with movement disorders of subacute onset. After this, the doctor can proceed with the treatment. Apart from this, focus should be on improving the lifestyle.
