However, the approach to Diwali in Karimnagar district is quite different. For the last 60 years, this community has followed a unique tradition. They celebrate Diwali in the crematorium. Families pay respect to their ancestors by lighting lamps at the graves of their loved ones, in Karimnagar, Telangana. At the Hindu crematorium of Karjana Gadda, families of a particular social group gather every year to commemorate their deceased relatives.

Diwali preparations
A week before the festival, families clean and paint the graves. On the day of Diwali, they gather to decorate the graves with flowers and spend the evening there. They remember their elders, make offerings to them, light candles and place their favorite food items on their graves. Families also perform rituals and prayers till midnight.
