There is a ritual in the marriages of Tharu tribe, which differentiates them from other communities. He tells that in the Tharu tribe, when the new bride cooks food in the kitchen for the first time, she gives the plate to her husband by moving it with her foot instead of her hand. After this the groom eats the food by placing his head on the plate. It is believed that the Tharu tribe was of Rajput origin. But, due to some reasons, they crossed the Thar Desert and went to Nepal. Nowadays, people of Tharu community live in India’s Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and neighboring country Nepal.

In which areas do Tharu live most?
In India, people of Tharu community are found in large numbers in Champaran in Bihar, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand and Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh. Tharu tribe is a tribe living in 141 villages of Khatima, Kichha, Nanakmatta, Sitarganj of Udham Singh Nagar in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. At the same time, 6.6 percent of the total population of Nepal belongs to the Tharu community. People of the Tharu community live in areas surrounded by mountains, rivers and forests on the border of Bihar and Nepal. The culture and rituals for which this tribe is known are still visible among the Tharus who live in the mountains and forests.

There are many strange wedding rituals
In the marriages of Tharu tribe, after the tilak, the boy wears a dagger and a turban. The boys go to the forest and worship the Sakhu tree with curd, Akshat and vermilion. Then they bring more branches of Sakhu wood. Lava is roasted with the same Saku wood on the wedding day. In these the engagement ceremony is called ‘Apna Paraya’. Some people of the community also call the engagement ritual as Dikhanauri. At the same time, about 10-15 days before the marriage, people from the groom’s side go to the girl’s house and decide the date of marriage. It is called ‘Baat Katti’. At the same time, the ritual of Gauna after marriage is called ‘Chala’ in the Tharu tribe. When cooking food for the first time in her in-laws’ house, the bride gives the plate to her husband by sliding it with her feet. Then the groom eats food.

Men are not allowed in the kitchen

In this tribe, there is a tradition of marrying the bride by paying money from the groom’s side and kidnapping the bride. However, now bride price and bride marriages are rare. Widow-brother-in-law marriage is fully recognized in the tribe. According to tradition, people of Tharu community worship Lord Shiva by building an altar. Some historians claim that the roots of the Tharu tribe are in the Himalayas. He says that due to the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, the Tharu people had to migrate to the plains.
