A recent African History TV documentary reveals, “For the Himba people, giving their wives to visitors for intercourse is considered the highest form of hospitality. This is considered a way of warmly welcoming guests. “It also helps in avoiding sexual jealousy, which is often prevalent in conservative marriages.” Let us tell you that the women of Himba tribes are very hardworking. The lifestyle of the Himba people is largely isolated from Namibian society. According to an estimate, 50,000 Himba tribe people live here, who are keeping their traditional existence alive. But despite this, they live happily with their wives. It is said that it is very easy for Himba women to get divorced. The documentary says that in this tribe, birth out of wedlock or extramarital affairs are not considered a big deal and every child has a “social father” to raise them.

It is further said in the documentary that the Himba tribe also has a tradition of exchanging wives, which has been going on for centuries. Under this, men here give permission to their wives to spend the night with unknown men. Not only this, when a guest or unknown man is sleeping with someone else’s wife, the woman’s husband is expected to spend the night in the other room. However, now the lifestyle of this tribe is gradually coming under threat. As the Western environment spreads in Namibia, the children of Himba tribes are feeling ashamed of their “backward” ways. Owen Katparo, from the Himba community, told the BBC: “When I go out of the village in traditional clothes, people look at me strangely.” Owen believes that outsiders take him more seriously when he wears Western clothing.
