Himanta Biswa Sarma Led Assam govt announces no Aadhaar cards to persons who did not apply for NRC

Assam NRC: In an effort to link the Aadhaar card with the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Assam government on Wednesday (December 11, 2024) decided to open the process for obtaining the unique identity card if the applicant or his family has not applied for the NRC. The submitted application will be rejected. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this decision was taken during the cabinet meeting in view of the infiltration attempt by citizens of crisis-hit Bangladesh.

He said, “In the last two months, Assam Police, Tripura Police and BSF (Border Security Force) have arrested a large number of infiltrators. This is why infiltration from Bangladesh is a matter of concern for us. We need to strengthen our system and that is why we have decided to tighten the Aadhaar card system. CM Sarma said after the cabinet meeting that from now on the General Administration Department of the state government will be the nodal for the verification of Aadhaar applicants. There will be an agency and an Additional District Commissioner will be the concerned person in each district.

‘Aadhaar card will be available only when you apply for NRC’

He said, “After the initial application, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will send it to the state government for verification.” The local Circle Officer (CO) will first check whether the applicant or his parents or family has applied for inclusion in the NRC or not. The Chief Minister said that if no application has been made for NRC, then Aadhaar will be used. The request will be immediately rejected and the report will be submitted to the Center accordingly.

To whom will this rule not apply?

“If it is found that the application for NRC was made, the CO will go for field-level verification as per Supreme Court directions,” he said. Aadhaar will be approved after the officer is completely convinced. CM Sarma also said that this new instruction will not apply to those central government employees who are working in other states and have applied for NRC. Have not done.
