House of the Dragon Ep 1 Review: ‘Game of Thrones’ justifies spin-off ‘House of the Dragon’

House of the Dragon Ep 1 Review: In the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’, we last saw the mighty Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) die at the hands of Jon Snow (Kit Harington). This last season came 3 years ago. While fans were disappointed with the way the popular show ended, HBO assured them that they would bring back ‘Game of Thrones’ through ‘House of the Dragon’. Its prequel has arrived after a long time. ‘House of the Dragon’ has gone on air on Sunday. It will stream in India on Monday.

‘House of the Dragon’ is a spin-off and is set in Westeros, around 200 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’. The ‘House of the Dragon’ chooses the successor to King Jaehaerys Targaryen. The conflict between his only daughter, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best), and her cousin, King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine), is shown. King Viserys summons the Great Council of Harrenhal to help decide on the next heir to the Iron Throne.

Due to Patriarchal Times, King Viserys I Targaryen is designated heir to the throne, while Princess Rhaenys is addressed as Queen. After this, there is a time jump in the episode. King Viserys sits on the throne and he thinks about choosing his successor. He has a daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. He is a dragon rider. King Viserys hopes that his pregnant wife will give birth to a son this time.

Until she gives birth to a son, the future of Westeros rests in the hands of her arrogant younger brother, Prince Daemon (MATT SMITH). Things are clearly not in favor of King Viserys. ‘House of the Dragon Dragon’ lives up to the expectations. It has all the elements of the original series. This show is a treat for all the fans who have been watching it (Game of Thrones) for years.

Beautiful scene and location

Compared to the first episode of ‘Game of Thrones’, the first episode of ‘House of the Dragon’ is completely opposite. By the end of the hour-long episode, director Miguel Sapochnik brilliantly showcases this story beyond ‘Game of Thrones’. At its center are two brutal scenes with Matt Smith, a brothel scene, a child birth scene, betrayal, politics and many other engaging scenes.

VFX is great

VFX is awesome. Especially when the dragon comes into focus. Fabian Wagner’s camera work is also worth mentioning. Overall, ‘House of the Dragon’ has brought back the full glory of ‘Game of Thrones’. You do not need to think much to see this. Have a look
