The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in India was started on 1 May 1956. An enforcement unit was then created in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, to look into matters related to the Foreign Exchange Act, 1947 (FERA). Whose headquarters was in Delhi and two branches in Calcutta and Mumbai. At that time the director of ED used to be a Legal Service officer. But a year later, in 1957, the name of the enforcement unit was changed to Directorate of Enforcement or Enforcement Directorate and another branch was opened in Chennai. After this, in the year 1960, the administrative control of ED was transferred from the Department of Economic Affairs to the Department of Revenue. At present, apart from the headquarters in Delhi, ED has a total of 5 regional offices in Mumbai, Chennai, Chandigarh, Kolkata and Delhi. It has 0 zonal offices and 11 sub zonal offices.
Main work of ED
ED mainly deals with cases related to economic crimes, money laundering and violation of foreign exchange laws. Let us tell you that the laws under which ED works include Foreign Exchange Management Act, Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002, Fugitive Economic Offenders Act 2018 and Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974.

The Enforcement Directorate has the power to conduct raids, arrest and seize property in cases falling under laws like Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002 (PMLA), Foreign Exchange Management Act (FCMA). Apart from this, if an FIR of embezzlement of Rs 1 crore or more is registered in any police station, then the police informs the ED about it. After this ED can start its investigation. Apart from this, ED itself can take cognizance of any case and start investigation. ED has the right to seize property even without inquiry.
