Cancer, a word that makes the heart stop when heard, is a disease that can happen to anyone, at any age. Yet, when we look at the statistics, we find that the incidence is higher among people above 50 years of age. More than 70% of cancer deaths globally occur in people above 50 years of age. There are many reasons behind this such as changes in the body with aging, increase in cell damage, weakness in the immune system, etc.  Let us know why the risk of cancer is higher in the elderly than in the youth?

Changes in cells
As we grow older, The cells of our body also age. These cells divide, and sometimes mistakes happen. Just as letters get misspelled in wrong handwriting, similarly ‘mistakes’ occur in cells, which are called ‘mutation’. When we are young, our body corrects these ‘mistakes’, but this ability diminishes with age. That is why older people are more prone to cancer.

Weak Immunity
As we grow older, our body becomes weaker. Not only does it become weak in repairing cells, but our defense system also becomes weak. When we are young our body is stronger in fighting diseases. But as age increases, the fighting power reduces, due to which diseases like cancer can easily attack.

Change in lifestyle
As we age, our lifestyle can also become a major cause of serious diseases like cancer. If we do not take special care of our lifestyle, the risk of diseases like cancer increases significantly after the age of 50-60. Some habits that further increase this risk are – smoking, drinking alcohol. , Unhealthy eating habits, obesity etc. By avoiding these and staying healthy, we can protect ourselves from terrible diseases like cancer in old age.
