How much money does it cost to print money? Have you ever wondered the answer to this question


The circulation of notes in the Indian market is more than that of coins. This is the reason why the Government of India also emphasizes more on printing notes than coins. Let us tell you in this article today how much money does RBI have to spend in printing 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 notes of India.

First of all, know how many notes can RBI print

It is not that any government or Reserve Bank of India can print as many notes as they want. There is also a rule for how many notes can be printed. Actually, how many notes RBI can print in India is decided on the basis of the minimum reserve system.

This system has been working in India since 1957. According to this system, the Reserve Bank of India will have to keep assets worth Rs 200 crore with itself. Which includes gold reserves of Rs 115 crore and foreign currency worth Rs 85 crore.  Only after storing so much money, RBI becomes free to print currency indefinitely, as per the requirement of the economy.

How much does it cost to print 10, 20 and 50 rupee notes?

When the Reserve Bank of India Note Printing Limited (BRBNML) was asked for a reply on this through RTI, according to the information received from there, in the financial year 2021-22 (FY22), Rs 960 had to be spent on printing 1 thousand notes of 10 rupees. In this way, the government had to spend 96 paise to print a 10 rupee note.

In the same year, Rs 950 had to be spent on printing one thousand notes of 20 rupees. That is, it cost 95 paise to print a 20 rupee note. Whereas, in the year 2021-22, Rs 1,130 had to be spent to print one thousand notes of Rs 50. That is, RBI has to spend 1 rupee 13 paise to print one 50 rupee note.

Understand the math of 100, 200 and 500 notes as well

In the same report, it has been told that RBI had to spend a total of Rs 1770 to print one thousand notes of Rs 100. That is, RBI had to spend Rs 1.77 to print one note of 100.

Talking about 200 note, in the same financial year, RBI had to spend Rs 2370 to print one thousand notes of 200. That is, RBI has to spend Rs 2.37 to print a 200 note.

Talking about 500 notes, RBI had to spend Rs 2290 in 2021-22 to print one thousand 500 notes. That is, RBI had to spend 2.29 paise to print a 500 note.
