Purchase has decreased by 11% this year compared to last year
The Government of India has purchased more than 196 lakh tonnes of wheat in the marketing year of 2024-25. But if we compare this year’s purchase so far with last year’s purchase, it is 11% less. During this period last year, the government had purchased more than 219.5 lakh tonnes. According to the National Food Security Act, 186 lakh tonnes of wheat is required annually under the government schemes.
But 196 lakh tonnes of wheat has been purchased more than required. Food Corporation of India (FCI), the organization that oversees the purchase of food items on behalf of the government, said that now the buffer stock of wheat has to be increased to meet the target of purchasing 310-320 lakh tonnes in the season of 2024-25.
Regarding the low procurement done so far, FCI President said that wheat procurement has reduced in Madhya Pradesh and Punjab, the two major states of India in terms of wheat production. But now wheat is arriving in Punjab and Haryana in sufficient quantity. Your target will be accomplished in the next some time.
At what price is it being bought?
The government has fixed the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat at Rs 2,275 per quintal in the financial year 2024-25. This year it is Rs 150 more more than last year. But apart from the government price, currently the price of wheat in the outside market is Rs 2,385.64 per quintal. Therefore, instead of selling wheat in government warehouses, farmers are preferring to sell wheat in the open market. Due to this, government procurement is also being affected.
