Applying for jobs is often stressful. So it can be disappointing when you get immediate rejection. People apply with great care over perfecting their CV, meticulously examining their cover letters, etc., and expect their applications to be taken seriously. But one applicant claims his application was rejected just three minutes after he sent the email.
A frustrated candidate on Reddit said he spent hours writing a cover letter for a job at National Grid, but the bot automatically rejected it. “I like the current job market in the UK,” she wrote, sharing a photo of two emails from a UK-based energy company. The first image appears to be an automated confirmation letter, thanking the candidate for his or her interest and contact.
But within three minutes another email came. The first reply, with a timestamp of 10.37, read: “We are reviewing the applications and will be in touch within the next 14 days.” But then at 10.40 another mail came which was bad news for the applicant.

It said, “Thank you for your application for this role. After careful consideration, we have decided that we will not proceed with your application. Thank you for your interest in National Grid careers.” This shockingly fast rejection left people extremely angry on social media, as reflected in their reactions. Many people also claimed that something similar had happened to them.
Another person said, “I work in HR and have also done recruiting in the past… We had a rule that we only sent rejections after two weeks, never before that and never on a Friday. “To be immediately rejected is devastating.” While some speculated that AI and keyword matching may also be at play here, one person wrote, “Your cover letter clearly didn’t have the specific words they wanted.” National Grid declined to comment on the man’s incident.
