India In UNSC: French President Emmanuel Macron has supported India’s permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). On Thursday (September 26), the French President said in the United Nations General Assembly that France has a positive attitude towards increasing the number of permanent members in the UNSC.
Macron said that not only India but also Japan, Germany, Brazil and two African countries should be included. He also said that there is a need for improvement and change in the functioning of the organization. On September 21, a statement from the Quad country also talked about reform in the UNSC. Not only this, the statement talked about adding African, Latin American, Asian and Caribbean countries.
What did Jaishankar say?
At the same time, America has faced many challenges in dealing with global crises like the recent Ukraine war and the deadlock on Gaza issues. These situations have demanded reforms from the UNSC to increase its effectiveness and credibility. Regarding this, Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that as the perception of the United Nations being weak increases, India’s chances of getting a permanent seat increase.
Voices are rising, India should also be involved
India’s bid for a permanent seat has recently gained momentum after a joint statement by the Quad nations, comprising the United States, India, Japan and Australia, during their sixth summit. Not just France, but US Secretary of State Antony Blinkin also emphasised that permanent seats for India, Japan and Germany should be included, as well as representation for Africa and other regions. Blinkin’s remarks suggest that India’s inclusion will enhance the legitimacy and functionality of the UNSC.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font has also advocated for India’s inclusion in the Security Council. India’s demand for permanent membership in the UNSC has received support from other global leaders including Joe Biden. The US President has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi During his recent bilateral meeting with him, he reiterated Washington’s full support to India’s bid.
Russia has also been supporting India’s demand for a permanent seat. The country’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed the need for greater representation of developing countries in the Council during the annual UN event.
Everyone has veto power
At present, only five countries are permanent members of the UNSC, which have veto power. These include the US, China, France, Russia and the UK. Apart from these five permanent members, the team also includes 10 non-permanent members, who are elected by the United Nations General Assembly for a term of 2 years. Talking about the permanent members, except China, everyone has expressed their support for the expansion of the UNSC in some way or the other.
UNSC was established by 50 countries in 1945
After the Second World War, in 1945, 50 countries together laid the foundation of UNSC. Now it has 193 members. The consent of the five permanent members of UNSC is very important for any proposal to be passed. If any one of these countries vetoes the proposal, then the proposal gets rejected. India believes that these five countries became members 7 decades ago, but in the changing world, more countries should be included in it.
