When and why was this force formed?

One of their main responsibilities is to protect the Air Force airfields during peace. The Garuda Commando Force was formed in the year 2004. When terrorists attacked two airbases in Jammu and Kashmir in 2001, the Indian Air Force felt the need for this special force. These commandos are not volunteers
Garud commandos of the Air Force are not volunteers, rather they are recruited directly for the training of special forces. Once joining this force, these commandos remain with this unit for their entire career. It is not easy to become a Garuda commando. The basic training course for all recruits lasts for 52 weeks, which is the longest in the Indian Special Forces. The attrition rate is very high in the initial three months of the probation period.
