On the same day, Indian Airlines flight IC 814 coming from Kathmandu, Nepal to Delhi was hijacked. Terrorists hijacked the ship and took it to Kandahar, Afghanistan. After this the process of putting pressure on the Indian government started.
In exchange for the release of the people on board the flight, the hijackers demanded the release of 36 terrorists from India and a ransom of US$200 million. Negotiations continued on this for about a week. Later India agreed to release 3 terrorists. The responsibility of taking the terrorists along and in return bringing the plane and the passengers inside safely was given to the then Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh. Jaswant Singh died on 27 September 2020. Today on this occasion let us know that story which you hardly know.
Had left by special plane carrying three terrorists
After talks with the plane hijackers, terrorists Masood Azhar and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, lodged in different jails of Jammu and Kashmir, were first brought to Srinagar. From there both of them were brought to Delhi in a Gulf Stream aircraft of the intelligence agency RAW. The third terrorist Omar Sheikh was already present in Delhi. After this all three were put in a ship. Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh also sat with him. After some time his plane left for Kandahar.
Many senior officers and SPG commandos were also present in the plane.
Jaswant Singh was not going to Kandahar alone with these terrorists. Four senior officers were also with him. This included former CBI director AP Singh, then Chief Vigilance Officer of Indian Airlines Ranjit Narayan, SPG operation in-charge Satish Jha and Surendra Pandey. A squad of SPG commandos was also with him. All these officers were sent with them as a precautionary measure, so that they could take retaliatory action if the terrorists reneged on their promise or did anything wrong.
