Indian origin man dies in Singapore after inhaling poisonous gas


Singapore Gas Case: The body of an Indian-origin man who died of poisonous gas in Singapore has been brought to his hometown in India for last rites. The 40-year-old man named Srinivasan Sivaraman was working as a cleaning operations manager in ‘Supersonic Maintenance Services’. The man died on May 23 after being exposed to poisonous gas while cleaning a tank. This work was going on at the ‘Choa Chu Kang Waterworks’ of the national water agency PUB. Sivaraman and two other Malaysian employees were found unconscious at the spot, after which they were taken to the hospital where the Indian man died.

PUB said that initial investigations revealed that the workers were exposed to hydrogen sulphide gas. This gas is released during water purification. Malaysian workers are still undergoing treatment. According to ‘The Straits Times’ and Tamil newspaper ‘Tamil Murasu’, Sivaraman’s body was handed over to his family and friends on 26 May itself. After the paperwork, the body was sent to India on 28 May. When this accident happened, Sivaraman’s family had come to Singapore for summer vacation. Sivaraman was a resident of Kambanatham village in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu state. On 26 May, about 50 people including family, friends and colleagues paid their last respects to Sivaraman.

An Indian man has died in Singapore before
There have been cases of gas leaks in Singapore before, recently a senior technician of Singapore Refining Company (SRC) has been sentenced to four months in jail. It is alleged that the gas leak occurred in the year 2020 due to the negligence of this technician, the court has held the technician responsible for this negligence. An Indian also died in this accident. According to the report of The Straits Times, the accused Lek Ching Hwa has admitted his negligence. He told that he was negligent in his duties at the oil refinery plant on Jurong Island. This accident related to gas leak happened on 17 September 2020. In this, 30-year-old Indian Palanivel Pandidurai died.
