Road Accidents in Canada: The driver involved in a horrific accident in Canada in 2018 will be deported to India. In fact, 16 members of the junior hockey team died in this accident. Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, who came to Canada from India in 2014, lived in Calgary city of Alberta province.
According to news agency PTI, Sidhu’s truck collided with a bus of the Humboldt Broncos Junior Hockey Team at a rural intersection near Tisdale in Saskatchewan province. In the accident that took place on April 6, 2018, 16 people on board the bus were killed and 13 were injured.
16 people died in the accident
According to a CBS News report, the decision to deport Sidhu came during a hearing of the Immigration and Refugee Board in Calgary on Friday. He had pleaded guilty in 2019 to 16 counts related to dangerous truck driving. 16 people died and 13 others were injured in the accident. He was granted full parole last year.
What was said in the hearing?
During a 15-minute hearing, Trent Cook, on behalf of the board’s immigration department, told Sidhu that he could not consider humanitarian and compassionate aspects. Sidhu’s lawyer Michael Green had said that this decision was already decided. Green said that to deport Sidhu, only proof was needed that he was not a Canadian citizen and that he had committed a serious crime.
Sidhu will file a petition
The lawyer said that more legal and procedural steps would still have to be taken and Sidhu could not be deported for months or years. According to a CBC News report, Green said he plans to file a petition soon, asking the government to restore Sidhu’s permanent resident status on humanitarian grounds.
Sidhu’s child is suffering from a serious illness
The lawyer said that Sidhu and his wife now have a child, who was born in Canada and the child has a serious heart and lung disease. The report said that several family members of those killed in the accident have said that they want to deport Sidhu. However, CBC News said that Scott Thomas, who lost his 18-year-old son Evan in the accident, has said that he has forgiven Sidhu and even advocated for him to stay in Canada.
