Indian Rsearchers Developing Affordable Treatment For Genetic Disorder Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Indian researchers are engaged in the struggle to find a cheap treatment for this rare genetic disease named ‘Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy’. There are more than 5 lakh patients of this disease in India. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) affects the muscles. Due to this genetic disease, the muscles start to die slowly. Due to the continuation of this condition for a long time, the muscles can also get completely damaged. Due to DMD disease, the production of a protein called ‘dystrophin’ in the muscle cells starts decreasing. Not only this, the production of this protein can also stop completely. This condition can be seen especially in boys. However, in rare cases, this disease can also affect girls.

According to the news agency report, the current treatment for DMD is either very low or very expensive. The cost of this treatment comes up to Rs 2-3 crore per child every year. Medicines are also mostly imported from foreign countries. The cost of supplements is also very high, which is not available to most of the people. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur has established a research center for DMD with the support of ‘Dystrophy Annihilation Research Trust’ (DART) Bengaluru and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jodhpur. The target of this center is to develop a cheap treatment for this rare and incurable disease.

damages muscles

DMD is an ‘X linked recessive muscular dystrophy’, affecting approximately one in 3500 boys. This gradually damages the muscle tissue. It is seen that children suffering from this genetic disease become unable to walk even after being 12 years old. They may have to use a wheelchair to move around. He said that at the age of about 20 years, a person may need support ventilation. There is currently no cure for DMD. However, this disease can be prevented from progressing through integrative treatment.

increasing life span of patients

According to scientists, muscle weakness is the main symptom of DMD. This disease starts taking the child in its grip at the age of 2 or 3 years. Until recently, children with DMD did not usually live beyond adolescence. However, due to advances in heart and respiratory care, the life span of such patients is now increasing.
