In a country like America, there is a lot of awareness about the rights of common people. Considerable sensitivity is also shown to the inhuman treatment meted out to criminals. Even in the jails here, special kind of vigilance is taken regarding human rights. In such a situation, if mentally ill prisoners are kept in a jail, then even the slightest disturbance happening there seems certain to make headlines. Something similar has come to light regarding the Marion Correctional Treatment Center in the state of Virginia, where after the death of a prisoner, the investigation has discussed the inhuman treatment being meted out to the prisoners here.
Some shocking truths were revealed during the investigation into the death of mentally disabled inmate Charles Givens at Marion Correctional Treatment Center. In the investigation that followed, a police investigator was shocked by complaints of “unbearable” conditions. It was so cold in the correctional center that toilet water would turn to ice and prisoners had to be treated for hypothermia several times.
The case was reviewed by a special grand jury and no criminal charges were filed. But Givens’ sister has taken legal action in federal court. She claims her brother suffered continuous abuse, including cold water torture, before being fatally beaten in 2022.

Their lawsuit sheds light on the dire conditions at the facility in Southwest Virginia, which a grand jury condemned as inhumane and deplorable, Mirror US reports. It was discovered that prisoners had been admitted to hospitals for hypothermia at least 13 times over three years during the cold season. Whereas medical staff kept raising concerns about the cold temperatures inside the jail.
Records show medical staff at the center wondered whether antipsychotic medications might be a factor in some inmates going to the hospital for hypothermia. But top doctors outside believe that such side effects are too severe and the increase in the number of hospital cases should have been considered a red flag.
