Because on this day a voice was raised for the rights of sex workers. Let us know what is the history of this day and since when is International Sex Workers Day being celebrated.

History of International Sex Workers Day

On 2 June 1975, about 100 sex workers gathered at the Saint-Nizier Church in the city of Lyon, France. They put forward their demands regarding the poor working conditions of sex workers. During this movement, the sex workers hung a banner on the steeple of the church which read, ‘Our children do not want their mothers to go to jail’.

This movement started by sex workers lasted for 8 days which attracted the attention of the whole world. Initially the French police rejected these demands and threatened to take action against the sex workers. The police attacked the church and evacuated the church from the sex workers.

But by then this issue had spread outside France to other countries of Europe. And as a result of this, Global Network of Sex Work Project i.e. NSWP was formed. Because the movement started on 2 June. That is why the organization declared 2 June as International Sex Worker Day.

Why is it needed?

The work of sex workers is very difficult. Like other works, this work does not get the support of society and law. According to the data of the year 2023, in which country of the world prostitution i.e. the work of sex workers has been legally recognized.

Even though this work has been legally recognized, sex workers still face many challenges. International Sex Worker Day is celebrated every year to make sex workers aware of their rights.
