The use of mobile connections, internet and broadband is constantly increasing in the country. The total number of telephone and mobile connections in the country has increased tremendously in the last 10 years. The government has answered the question asked in Parliament. Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Shekhar has given a detail about this in the Parliament.
Lok Sabha members Krishna Prasad Tenneti and Y.S. Avinash Reddy asked the government how much the total number of telephone and mobile connections has increased during the last decade. Also, how much has been the increase in internet and broadband access during this period. The Lok Sabha member also asked how much foreign direct investment (FDI) has increased in this sector.
The Minister of State gave this answer
In response to this, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Shekhar said that till 31.03.2014, there were 93.3 crore telephone connections, while by 31.03.2024, its number increased to 119.87 crore. During this period, the total growth rate was 28.48 percent. This data has been taken from TRAI’s quarterly report on telecom service performance indicators from 2014 to 2024.
Mobile connections increased so much in 10 years
At the same time, the number of mobile connections in the country till 31.03.2014 was 90.45 crores, which increased to 116.59 crores by 31.03.2024. During this period, the growth rate has been 28.90 percent. According to the government, internet subscription was 25.16 crores till 31.03.2014, which increased to 95.44 crores by 31.03.2024. During this period, the growth rate was 279.33. At the same time, broadband subscription was 6.09 crores till 31.03.2014, which increased to 92.41 crores by 31.03.2024, i.e. the growth rate in the last 10 years has been 1417.41 crores.
Let us tell you that the telecom sector has been one of the largest recipients of foreign direct investment. The telecom sector has received FDI of US$ 25-16 billion in the period 2014-24, compared to US$ 12 billion in 2014-24.
