This research is based on individuals who are at risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease while eating a plant-based diet. With the promotion of vegan diets, the use of extra virgin olive oil has also increased rapidly. With the belief that this oil reduces cholesterol levels.
Mediterranean diet means fats obtained from animal food. By adding olive oil in it, it is believed that fat consumption reduces to half of the body’s energy intake. The study has seen the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and also looked at whether adding olive oil to a low fat, whole food plant-based diet can really reduce the risk factor of heart disease. Or is the possibility of this very low.
The scale of the research
To test this, the team of researchers selected 40 adults whose age ranged from 18 to 79 years. All of them were put on a vegan diet for a full eight weeks. Out of these eight weeks, four teaspoons more of extra virgin olive oil was added to their food for four weeks. For the next four weeks, the amount of extra virgin olive oil in their food was kept limited. A gap of one week was also kept in between these diet changes.
Changes in the cardiometabolic profile, which includes cholesterol, blood sugar and inflammation, were studied after the two types of extra virgin olive oil diets. The study period was chosen before and after the diet. Researchers found that cholesterol levels also changed due to the low to high extra virgin olive oil diet from the baseline of the research, i.e. where the study started.
Research results
The results of the research are surprising. In the period when a little more extra virgin olive oil was consumed, the level of LDL i.e. bad cholesterol decreased. However, the researchers have also made it clear that further research will continue in this regard.
The next week, when the amount of extra virgin olive oil was limited, the rate of reduction in bad cholesterol also decreased. In simple words, it is important for those people who are at risk of heart disease to think before reducing the amount of extra virgin olive oil. This research has been published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
