Israel Strikes on Iran Consulate: On Monday (April 1, 2024), Israel carried out a deadly attack targeting the Iranian Consulate in the Syrian capital, Damascus. The embassy has been completely destroyed in this attack and all the people present in it are reported dead and injured. According to Iranian state TV, a Revolutionary Guard commander is also among the dead.
According to news agency AFP, Britain-based war monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims that the embassy has been attacked by Israeli missiles, in which 8 people have died. The Iranian Embassy building has been destroyed in this attack.
There has been no immediate comment from Israel regarding the deadly attack in Damascus. This attack has taken place at a time when there is increased tension in Israel regarding the Gaza war against the Palestinian organization Hamas. At the same time, violence has increased between Israel and Iran’s allies.
Earlier, Iran TV had claimed that several diplomats were also among the dead.
Rescue teams engaged in search of people buried under the debris
According to AFP, the annex building was seen to have collapsed after the attack, and emergency services were dispatched to the Damascus district of Mazzeh to treat the injured as quickly as possible. A search is also being conducted for people buried under the debris.
Syria’s Defense Ministry also claimed that the building was completely destroyed in the attack. All the people present inside it have been killed and injured. The work of removing dead bodies and injured from the debris is going on.
Iranian state TV said the dead included Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the Quds Force, the foreign operations branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
This was the fifth attack on Damascus in eight days in Syria, whose President Bashar al-Assad is supported by Iran, Israel’s long-time arch enemy in the region.
‘Attacks carried out by F35 fighter planes’
On the other hand, Iran’s Noor news agency claims that the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Damascus, Hussein Akbari, and his family were not harmed in the Israeli attack. Quoting Akbari, Iranian state TV claimed that at least 5 people were killed in the attack by F35 fighter planes.
