It is called the city of spirits or zombie town, people here consider themselves lucky to be alive!

City of ghosts, village of vampires! You must have heard such names a lot, but in a corner of the world, there is indeed a city which is called Zombie Town or City of Spirits. The interesting thing is that there is no ghost of any kind here. Neither are stories of ghosts or zombies popular here. The reason for this is also very simple, due to which this city has been given such names. People consider themselves very lucky if they are alive and the reason for all this is very simple.

There is a small town named Colma, south of San Francisco metropolis in California province of America. In the last few decades, the situation here has become such that the number of graves here has become much more than the number of residents. The situation is such that there are a thousand graves for every living person here. This is the reason why people have started calling it the city of spirits or Zombie Town.

Today the population of this city is only 1550, while there are about 1500000 graves here. Such a situation in Colma started in the year 1912, when the neighboring city of San Francisco decided to ban cemeteries. The reason for this was that as the population increased there, land was becoming very expensive.

In the early 1900s, San Francisco had 27 cemeteries. Nowadays there are just two, which means there was a lot of work to exhume. At first this involved digging graves in San Francisco itself, with over 150,000 bodies being transported to Colma, one of the largest ‘migrations of the dead’.

Over the next few decades, Colma filled up with San Franciscans’ bodies until it became an official necropolis in 1924. It has never had more living residents than dead. Today it is a thriving spot for florists and carvers. Over time, residents consider themselves caretakers of the graves and feel an emotional connection to them.
