Jagannath Puri Yatra 2023: Beginning of Lord Jagannath Yatra This year, the world famous Jagannath Rath Yatra, which is going to start from Puri, Odisha, is starting today i.e. 20 June 2023. Every year this yatra is taken out on the second date of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadh and this yatra ends with the return of Jagannath ji on the 11th day of Ashadh Shukla Paksha. Lakhs of devotees come from India and abroad to participate in this yatra. The Jagannath Temple of Odisha is one of the four holy places. Here the 8th incarnation of Shri Hari Vishnu along with Shri Krishna, his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra are worshipped. The idols of all three are enshrined in the Jagannath temple.
It is said that the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is also stopped in front of a shrine. Now the question is why the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is stopped in front of the tomb. Let’s know what is the story behind stopping Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra in front of the tomb.
Why is Rath Yatra taken out?
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Jagannath along with his brother Balarama and sister Subhadra goes to his maternal aunt’s house during the Rath Yatra. Because of this, 3 chariots depart from the Jagannath temple in Puri, in which the chariot of Balarama ji is in front, sister Subhadra’s chariot is in the middle and Jagannathji’s chariot is at the back. It is believed that once Lord Jagannath’s sister Subhadra expressed her desire to see the city, then he along with brother Balabhadra took her on a chariot to show her the city. During this, Lord Jagannath also reached his maternal aunt’s house in Gundicha and stayed there for seven days.
God’s chariot stops at the tomb
It is told about the yatra that during this Rath Yatra, the chariot of God is stopped even at a tomb. This Mazar is about 200 meters ahead on the Grand Road and as soon as this chariot passes from there, there is a Mazar on the right side, where it is stopped. God’s chariot stops at the tomb
Why is travel stopped at the tomb
According to legend, during Jahangir’s time a Subedar had married a Brahmin widow and had a son named Salbeg. Because of the mother being a Hindu, Salbeg had faith in Lord Jagannath cult from the beginning. Salbeg had great devotion towards Lord Jagannath, but he could not enter the temple.
It is told in this legend that Salbeg stayed in Vrindavan for a long time and fell ill when he came to Odisha to participate in the Rath Yatra. After this, Salbeg remembered God with all his heart and expressed his desire to have darshan once. Lord Jagannath became happy on this and his chariot itself stopped in front of Salbeg’s cottage. There God allowed Salbeg to worship. Lord Jagannath’s chariot moved forward only after paying respect to Salbeg. And even today this tradition is going on in the memory of Salbeg.
