Jairam Ramesh alleged on PM Modi 25 deaths occurred in Banaras Lok Sabha constituency due to manual scavenging in last 10 years


Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Congress on Sunday (7 March) Narendra Modi The government has been accused of doing ‘injustice’ to the sanitation workers. She said that if she comes to power, she will end the practice of manual scavenging and provide employment to the people engaged in it after training them for some other work.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh shared on ‘X’ a media news regarding the death of a sanitation worker due to gas leakage after entering the sewer without equipment.

Ramesh wrote that on April 5, 2024, a sanitation worker in the Prime Minister’s own Lok Sabha constituency died due to gas leakage after entering the sewer without equipment. This is not a new issue in Banaras – during the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ we were told that in the last 10 years, more than 25 deaths have occurred in Banaras due to falling into sewers.

He said that on one hand, the Modi government is doing such injustice towards the sanitation workers, on the other hand, Congress has made some promises for them in its ‘Nyay Patra’.

‘Congress will end the practice of manual scavenging’

Ramesh wrote that Congress will end the evil practice of manual scavenging. All manual scavengers will be made skilled for some other work and will be provided jobs. A dignified and secure life will be ensured for them.

‘Will give compensation of Rs 30 lakh to the families of sweepers’

He said that the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013 will be strictly enforced and anyone employing manual scavenging will be punished. Ramesh further said that a compensation of Rs 30 lakh will be given to the families of the sanitation workers who lost their lives during manual scavenging.
