A meeting of the BJP Central Election Committee was held regarding the Jammu-Kashmir and Haryana assembly elections. In this, the names of the possible candidates for Jammu-Kashmir were discussed. It is being told that the party has finalized 50 names and it can be announced on Monday. This is the first election after the abrogation of Article 370.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda and Union Minister Jitendra Singh were also present in the meeting held at the BJP headquarters on Sunday. Sources said that the BJP will not contest elections on all 90 seats in the Union Territory. It may also leave some seats for allies. However, formally the BJP has not yet formed any alliance with any party in Jammu and Kashmir. Voting will be held in Jammu and Kashmir on 18 and 25 September and 1 October and votes will be counted on 4 October.
In the 2014 assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti’s party PDP got 28 seats, while BJP won 25 seats. Jammu and Kashmir National Conference got 15 seats and Congress got 12 seats. PDP and BJP formed a coalition government and Mehbooba Mufti became the Chief Minister. But the government fell in 2018 after BJP withdrew from the coalition.
