Janmashtami 2024 Krishna worship is incomplete without Kheera or cucumber, must include worship material

Birthday: The festival of Janmashtami is today on 26 August 2024 and its preparations are going on in full swing. This festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Shri Krishna (Krishna Janmotsav).

According to the Panchang, Lord Krishna was born in the Dwapar era on the eighth day of the Bhadrapad month and in the Rohini Nakshatra. Therefore, the child form of Shri Krishna is worshipped on Janmashtami. On Janmashtami, Kanha is adorned in a grand manner and worshipped with rituals.

In the worship of Janmashtami, special types of bhog (Janmashtami bhog) are prepared and puja materials are also required. But the most important thing in the worship is ‘cucumber’. Without cucumber, the worship of Janmashtami is considered incomplete. Therefore, do not forget to include cucumber in the puja material. Cucumber with stalk is used on Janmashtami, it is considered as umbilical cord. At the time of Krishna’s birth at night, the cucumber is cut with a coin and the stalk is cut off. This is considered as a symbol of separation of Krishna and mother Devaki after birth. Therefore, in many places, this method of cutting cucumber on Janmashtami is also called Naal Chhedan.

Just as after the birth of a child, the umbilical cord is cut and the child is separated from the womb, similarly, on Janmashtami, there is a tradition of cutting the stalk of the cucumber to mark the birth of Krishna. This tradition of cutting cucumber on Janmashtami has been going on for centuries and is still followed today.
