The impasse between the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration and the studentsâ union may soon come to an end. The two sides have reached a consensus on several demands. The university has agreed to meet at least six of the 12 key demands of the protesting studentsâ union. These include the old in-house entrance exam system for admissions, restoring the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE), conducting a campus caste census, increasing scholarship amounts and a proposal to reduce the weightage given to the oral test for admission. Despite these developments, the studentsâ union has continued its protest.
JNU Studentsâ Union President Dhananjay and Councilor Nitish Kumar remained on hunger strike on Monday as well. They demand that the JNU administration give a written confirmation of their demands. This hunger strike began on August 11. The studentsâ union claimed that the health of the students on hunger strike is deteriorating. They said that Dhananjayâs weight has decreased by more than five kilos. Nitishâs weight has decreased by about seven kilos. He has become very weak. Apart from this, he is having severe pain in his joints and muscles. JNUSU has been on hunger strike for the past 15 days.
