Joshimath Sinking Cracks In 760 Houses And Four Wards Unsafe In This City Of Uttarakhand


Joshimath Sinking: Cracks have started appearing in some more houses in Joshimath, Uttarakhand. According to the report of the District Disaster Management Authority, the cracks have now reached 9 wards of the urban area. There are 147 houses which are in completely unsafe zone. Till now cracks have reached 760 houses. Wards 1, 4, 5 and 7 of Joshimath have been declared unsafe. Along with this, the district administration has selected 83 buildings in Joshimath for relocation, in which 2,190 people can live.

Twenty buildings have also been identified in Pipalkoti near Joshimath, in which 2,205 people can live. So far 657 people from 185 families have been temporarily shifted. People should not face any problem in these relief camps, so the District Magistrate himself is meeting the people and seeing the arrangements for food and drink. Under the relief works, the district administration has so far distributed an amount of more than Rs 1 crore to 210 affected people as assistance.

Financial assistance to affected families

On January 13, a cabinet meeting was held regarding the rehabilitation and relief package for the disaster affected. Chief Secretary Dr. SS Sandhu and Disaster Secretary Ranjit Sinha told that a roadmap was prepared for the future of Joshimath in the meeting. Along with this, the cabinet has approved the release of financial assistance of 45 crores. The cabinet has identified five places for rehabilitation. Apart from this, the rate of rent for the affected families has been increased from Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000.

Landslide intensity increasing rapidly

According to a report by ISRO’s Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC), the subsidence was slow from April to November 2022. Joshimath has sunk by -8.9 cm in these seven months. After this, in 12 days from 27 December 2022 to 8 January 2023, the intensity of land subsidence increased to 5.4 cm.
