There are 9 wards in Joshimath Municipal Council. Of these, Marwari Ward, Sunil Ward (on the road leading to Auli), Manohar Bagh Ward and Singhdhar Ward are the four wards most at risk. Apart from this, some buildings of Jaypee Power Colony in Marwari Ward have also developed cracks on the ground. Huh. Damage caused by Tapovan tunnel?
Scientists associated with Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti attribute the reason for the subsidence to NTPC’s 520 MW Tapovan-Vishnugad project. The tunnel of this project is being built from below Joshimath itself. Looking at the geographical location of Joshimath, this entire area is situated on the mountain. Scientists say that ground water sources have been pierced in making this tunnel, due to which internal leakage of water has started and the mountain is sinking.
What did the scientists say?
The most affected areas are close to the river. The confluence of Alaknanda and Dhauliganga also takes place in this area. From here these rivers turn towards Badrinath. Local people suspect that due to last year’s flood, such incidents can also happen. At the same time, scientists of IIT Roorkee say that there is no sewer system in Joshimath and all the water goes to the mountain. This can also be a reason for the mountain to sit.
Joshimath mountain is not strong
Scientists of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and IIT Roorkee believe that the fast currents of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers are eroding the hill below Joshimath. This erosion is also happening easily because the Joshimath mountain was once a glacier and then due to the end of the snow, the remaining mud and pebbles are piled up and are not strong.
