Swad Ka Safarnama: If Kachari is called the desi vegetable of India, then it will not be an exaggeration. Earlier it used to grow on its own in the fields and its vine used to spread everywhere, but now due to its nutritional properties, it is being cultivated in the country and it is easily seen in the markets as well. Its intake keeps the body away from indigestion and constipation. Kachari is also considered rich in anti-oxidant properties. It is believed that in all the sandy areas of the world, there is a lot of garbage production.

Different sourness is its specialty

Kachari (Cucumis Callosus/Snap Melon) is considered to belong to the family of melon and cucumber. In many parts of India, a delicious curry of green chillies is prepared with kachri. The taste of this vegetable is excellent. In some areas, chutney made from garbage is eaten a lot. Since Kachari has a different type of sourness, its launji (sour-sweet vegetable prepared by adding special spices) is also very much liked. Its size ranges from very small cucumber to melon. When it is raw in the herd of vine spreading on the ground, then its color appears slightly mottled white. After ripening, seeds fall in it and yellowness starts appearing. You may be surprised that the musty smell emanating from the garbage can attract you.

Idioms and sayings related to garbage are in trend

In rural areas, many sayings and idioms are in vogue regarding garbage. It is said that in the month of Bhado, the white flowers that come on the vine start making kachri and if it ripens completely and starts becoming sweet during the Diwali season. Then it starts to taste like melon. It is said in Rajasthan that ‘Diyali Ra Diya Ditha, Kachar Bor Matira Meetha.’ That is, when the lamps of Diwali start appearing, then believe that kachri, ber and matira have become sweet. Another idiom is widely spoken in the countryside. The person who spoils any work or finds faults in every work, or a person who hinders in every work is called ‘Kachar Ka Beej’. The reason for this is that the seeds of Kachari are very pungent and if a seed is put in milk, it tears it. Vegetable of fresh kachari is made, but in the country, it is dried by removing the peel of kachar and then the chutney made of green or red chillies with it is considered very tasty.

Its intake also prevents Pitta and Vata.

Food historians have not given much ‘weight’ to Kachari, the reason being that there was no planned cultivation of it years ago. Despite this, it is believed that the origin of garbage has been in sandy areas, in addition to African countries, India is also included. The properties of Kachari have been described in the Ayurvedic texts of India. In ‘Raj Nighantu’, one of the Nighantu texts related to Ayurveda, it has been called Mrigakshi and information has been given that it is a bile and carminative and cures chronic cold. It is sweet in taste but produces bile.

According to Vaidyaraj Dinanath Upadhyay, former dean of Mumbai University, the garbage is dried and made into powder. By making this powder with other herbs, an effective medicine is made to cure the stomach. Anti-oxidant properties are found in Kachari and the nutrients found in it keep the body away from constipation and indigestion. Protein and Vitamin C are also found in it, which keep the body away from common diseases. It also keeps the body cool and does not allow the heat to come near. Eating garbage in general does not cause any disorder in the body, but if eaten in excess, it can cause stomach upset. Its excessive consumption also causes sore throat.
