Story of Apara Ekadashi Vrat
According to the legend, in ancient times, a pious king named Mahidhwaj ruled. His younger brother Vajradhwaj was cruel, unrighteous and unjust. He hated his elder brother. One day he killed his elder brother and buried his body under a Peepal tree in a forest. Due to untimely death, the king became a ghost and started creating havoc by living on the same Peepal tree.
This is how the king got freedom
One day sage Dhumya passed by there, he saw the ghost on the tree and with the power of penance he came to know everything about the ghost, and also understood the reason for his mischief. After this the sage brought him down from the Peepal tree and preached him about the knowledge of the other world.
Apart from this, the sage himself observed the fast of Apara (Achala) Ekadashi to free the king from the ghost world. Due to his power, the king was freed from the ghost world and after expressing gratitude to the sage, he assumed a divine body and went to heaven in the Pushpak plane.
