First on Colors TV and now on Sony Entertainment Television since 2016, Kapil Sharma’s vulgarity or desipan can be gauged from the fact that he says that first he comes on TV and now he will come on Netflix. They forget that Netflix is of no use without a screen and most people watch Netflix on television or mobile only. From this one thing, you can guess how thoughtfully Kapil Sharma’s Netflix standup special would have been written. It was released after a long wait on 28 January, millions of people are watching it. Most of those onlookers are shaking their heads. Because in this 54 minutes long special neither Kapil Sharma is in his best form nor any character of any member of his team is seen on the stage except his musicians. Kapil Sharma’s standup has not progressed with time and has stopped there. It seems as if you are listening to the tales of fake bravery from your favorite maternal uncle who came to a wedding.

The Kapil Sharma Show or Comedy Nights with Kapil, in both shows Kapil is accompanied by some celebrities, and some well-known actors like Sunil Grover, Kiku Sharda, Chandan Prabhakar, Bharti or Krishna Abhishek. There is an army of more than half a dozen comedy writers on his show and there are many hours of rehearsals after which we watch his show on Saturday and Sunday. His standup on Netflix is far and away the best. The script of this Netflix special is written by his favorite writer and creative director of his television show Anukul Goswami. The script is so bad in many parts that the punches are not delivered properly. The format in which Kapil has been engaged for the last few years cannot be used in standup. When Kapil earned his name in the field of standup comedy by becoming the winner of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007, there has been a world of difference in the style and presentation of standup comedy since then. Apart from Vir Das, AIB, Abish Mathew, Zakir Khan, dashing comedians like Atul Khatri, Amit Tandon, Sandeep Sharma are now doing standup with comedy appealing to the urban masses. Due to OTT platforms, even international comedians are now seen by Indians. Netflix has made this special with the desire to capitalize on Kapil’s popularity, which is weak as a standup comedy. Although Kapil’s fan following is so much that even if everyone watches it even once, it will become the most watched special.

Kapil Sharma: In I Am Not Done Yet, Kapil narrates some incidents from his life. Since it is autobiographical and Leo Tolstoy has also said that ‘All autobiographies are lies’, some facts must have been tampered with in this. But Kapil is basically a straight man and despite coming from a small town like Amritsar, he has achieved such a huge status and position in the entertainment world. They are sure of this status and position, but somewhere inside, that small town resident still says, I have not kept anything except my friend in all this. Kapil’s progress is commendable because very few people have an idea of his hard work along with his talent. In this special, he has shown a glimpse of her. Very few people have been able to see the pain in Kapil’s eyes while talking about his depression in such a funny way. The man who came from Punjab does everything openly. He has no fear of anyone. He is not worried that people will judge him. He is not even afraid that the people of the big city will make fun of him. He just waits for the opportunity when he can answer everyone in his own style.

The story of tweeting to the prime minister after drinking alcohol has been highlighted, where Kapil makes fun of his own disorientation after drinking alcohol and also salutes Dr. Manmohan Singh, who studied in Hindu College Amritsar many years before him. He expressed his sorrow that he could understand his unique relationship with his father after his father’s death. Kapil, who loves his elder brother and mother very much, also comes face to face with his wife Ginni in this program, who responds to his words even faster than Kapil and the audience laughs seeing this love. Kapil’s jokes and punches are pure Amritsari and where he puts Mumbai style, those jokes fail. Kapil’s humor is kept in the category of “insult”. He often mocks or insults the audience, his fellow actors or sometimes his celebrity guests. They often crack bad jokes on the faces or bodies of their colleagues. He is alone in standup in Netflix, so he can’t do anything like this, so he makes fun of himself, though he doesn’t insult. Kapil’s specialty is that he has been doing comedy on stage for almost 20-25 years, but whenever he gets a chance, he pulls himself up. Kapil, who is fond of singing, loves his voice while he has been caught singing out of tune on several occasions. At the end of this special, he pays a beautiful tribute to the memory of his father in the form of a song and that too in Kapil’s favorite language ‘English’. This tribute is special because Kapil did not know how to speak English till many years after coming to Mumbai, still his hand is tight but with this one tribute Kapil has reminded everyone that his work is not over yet. There is a lot that is inside Kapil and like the peels of an onion, they will keep on opening, they will not only make you cry but will make you laugh from the heart.

Kapil’s comedy shows are watched all over the world and there are many people who watch TV for one and a half hours only on these two days of the week. Many such people who had gone into depression due to Covid, have been able to save their lives by laughing with Kapil and his friends. Kapil’s show has many times such viewers who tell how Kapil’s show kept him, his parents and relatives laughing in his last moments. Kapil, who loved animals very much, had adopted Zanjeer, the most famous dog of the dog squad of Mumbai Police. Kapil’s friends say that he makes Kapil cry more easily than he laughs easily. No one’s sorrow is seen through them. He had also dragged his childhood friend Chandan Prabhakar in the Laughter Challenge, and because of Kapil’s company, he became the runner-up. Famous comedian Bharti gives Kapil the status of her elder brother because in the beginning of her career, seeing the delicate financial condition of Bharti’s house, Kapil used to give his wages and prize money to Bharti several times. In Kapil’s band, Dinesh, his friend from Amritsar days, works on lead guitar. Kapil rounded off all these things in a special way because he gets uncomfortable listening to such things. Kapil does not like to cry in front of anyone and he cannot even see his loved ones crying.

This standup of Kapil was weak in many respects. Script could have been better. The name of this show was Kapil Sharma: I am not done yet, which means that Kapil’s work is not done yet, his innings will go on for a long time. Because of this, the moments of his life that he mentioned were very emotional, comedy was less. If you see this standup from the point of view of only one standup, then you will understand that Kapil’s show is not a stand-alone show. Kapil is actually like Sachin Tendulkar. No one else has talent like him, but the team is made up of 11 players in which Ganguly is also there, Dravid is also there, Laxman is also there, Kumble is also there. This presentation of Netflix does not do justice to Kapil’s talent. This special should have talked about his relationship with his co-stars, or else Kapil’s importance should have been shown from the point of view of these friends. Maybe Kapil doesn’t like it, but the audience, knowing the reality of their friend Kapil, showered more love on him.
