Karnataka High Court Takes Up Suo Motu PIL On Bengaluru Metro Pillar Collapse


Bengaluru Metro pillar collapsed: The Karnataka High Court has suo motu filed a PIL on the death of a woman and her child due to the collapse of a pillar of the under-construction Bengaluru Metro. Starting the hearing on the PIL on Friday, January 13, in the High Court, Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale and Justice Ashok S Kinagri referred to the news reports about the accident and expressed concern. Now he has sought answers from the concerned authorities on the security measures of the Metro project.

The High Court has also sought answers from the officials associated with the Metro project (Bengaluru Metro) regarding the security measures specified in the tender documents. The Court has also asked whether the State Government had issued orders on safety measures and fixed the responsibility of the contractors and officials involved in the construction work?

Fatal accident due to falling metro pillar in Bengaluru

Let us tell you that on January 10, a pillar of the metro under construction near HBR Layout in Bengaluru collapsed and fell on a two-wheeler, killing a woman and her child. The Chief Minister had expressed grief over the accident and had announced financial help for the victim.

Now in this case, the High Court has included the State Government, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) as the accountability of the incident. The High Court ordered the issue of notice to the defendants and then adjourned the hearing.

In this matter, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has sought the help of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to conduct an independent inquiry into the incident and has also suspended its engineers involved in the construction work.

FIR against many accused

At the same time, an FIR has been registered against Nagarjuna Construction Company and 7 others including a Deputy Chief Engineer and an Executive Engineer of BMRCL.
