Thiruvananthapuram: Nattukaaltheri Open Jail, located in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, is the first open jail in the state. It was established on 8 August 1962. Nattukaaltheri Open Jail is spread over a vast area of 472 acres, located near Neyyar Dam. According to recent figures, there are a total of 367 prisoners here. Let us tell you that in 2018 this jail sold organic products worth Rs 1.5 crore. Along with farming, fish farming is also done using modern technology. Social service projects are run by the joint efforts of the prison administration and the prisoners, which promote rehabilitation and self-reliance of the prisoners.
Special emphasis on farming in jail routine
The special thing about this jail is that unlike traditional jails, farming is given prominence in the daily routine of the prisoners. Vegetables are cultivated in 5 acres in the jail premises, in which beans, beans, okra, brinjal, chilli, cucumber etc. are grown. In 2018, this open prison had sold organic agricultural products worth about Rs 1.5 crore. Here high-tech farming is done using state-of-the-art technology. Apart from this, a check dam has also been built in the jail premises, in which fish farming is also done.
Rehabilitation and social responsibility of prisoners
Due to the collective efforts of the jail administration and the prisoners, many social service projects are also going on here, due to which the jail department is fulfilling its social responsibility towards the general society. Moving beyond the notions of torture of prisoners in traditional prisons, Nattukaaltheri Open Jail is working on several schemes to enhance the art, social awareness and self-reliance of the prisoners.
