Gwalior, Devotees wait for a year to taste the Khajla sweet, which is available at the Gwalior trade fair in Madhya Pradesh. The taste of this sweet can be gauged from the fact that people not only eat it while sitting at the shops set up in the fair, but also pack it in kilos and take it with them.

Giving information to News18 Local, Rakesh Sikarwar, director of Khajla’s shop at the trade fair, said that Khajla is a special type of sweet which is prepared from flour and sugar syrup, among other things. People like it very much. He told that he has been setting up a Khajla shop in the Gwalior trade fair for almost 25 years. Earlier, his father used to run a shop here.

Rakesh told that he had heard about this sweet from his forefathers. It was prepared by an artisan from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. This is a matter of 100 years old. Presently this sweet is prepared in Agra, Auraiya, Etawah, Etah and other western regions. Referring to a legend, he said that earlier this sweet was known only as Khaja. But sometimes controversies used to happen due to the special name of the sweet. After eating sweets, people used to tell the shopkeeper about giving money that you only said to eat, so we ate. Considering all these things, later it came to be known as Khajla.

At the same time, even today it is known as Khaja in rural areas. Rakesh Sikarwar told that keeping in view the demand of the people, five types of Khajla have been specially prepared. People are liking this very much. He said that sweet Khajla is sold at the rate of Rs.120 to 170 per kg, Faded Khajla at Rs.120 to 170 per kg, Salted Khajla at Rs.50 per kg, Creamy Khajla at Rs.240 per kg, Khova Khajla at Rs.320 per kg.

This is how Khajla sweet is prepared

Rakesh told that first of all flour is kneaded with milk and oil to prepare Khaja. After this its dough is prepared, then it is cooked in vegetable oil on a slow flame for a long time. After it swells, it is immersed in sugar syrup. Khowa and cream are also mixed in this syrup. Apart from this, Namkeen Khaja is prepared without sugar syrup.
