Kolkata Doctor Rape Murder Case: Expressing grief over the incident of rape and murder of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata, more than 70 Padma award winning doctors have written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding the implementation of a special law as soon as possible to deal with violence against health workers. They also demanded the implementation of better security protocols in hospitals.
Renowned doctors like Ashok Vaidya, Harsh Mahajan, Anoop Mishra, AK Grover, Alka Kriplani and Mohsin Wali demanded immediate and personal intervention of Prime Minister Modi to deal with this dangerous situation. They suggested that the central government immediately bring an ordinance to ensure the harshest punishment for those involved in violence against health workers.
Demand to increase security in medical institutions
After the rape and murder incident at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, there are large scale protests across the country. Eminent doctors also urged strict enforcement of existing laws and increasing security measures in hospitals and medical institutions. Those who wrote the letter also include former ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava and former Director of AIIMS, Delhi Dr Randeep Guleria.
What did the doctor say in the letter written to the PM?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi The letter to the Prime Minister said, “We Padma award winning doctors are writing to you with deep concern and pain about the horrific incident that took place recently at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. As the head of our country, we appeal to you for immediate and personal intervention to overcome this terrible situation.”
The letter said, “We stand in solidarity with the victim’s family, whose pain and loss is unimaginable. We also extend our full support to the medical community, which is facing such violence during their work. The safety and dignity of healthcare professionals must be protected with utmost priority.”
