This part of the highway has become weak due to continuous cutting of vegetation from Joshimath to the middle of Rishikesh in Uttarakhand and unstable slopes of the mountains. Scientist says that there is a possibility of increase in cases of landslides here. Scientist has expressed the danger of avalanche 1.25 times on every kilometer for 247KM long highway on NH-7. This study is based on systematic survey and statistical model of landslides. Its purpose is to find out about the susceptibility of landslides on NH-7 in high spatial resolution.
According to the report of news agency PTI, in the year 2022, after heavy rains in September and October, 300 landslides will occur on this corridor. In the study based on the list of more than 100 landslides, the main factors controlling major incidents have been identified. Jurgen, a scientist at the Institute of Environmental Science and Geography at Germany’s Potsdam University and the author of this study, said that most of the landslides occurred between Rishikesh and Srinagar inside Lithozone-2 and between Pipalkoti and Joshimath under Lithozone-1. Lithozones are rocks of similar rock characteristics. Regrouping of rock features from a geological map of Uttarakhand.
Rocks vulnerable to precipitation
Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, Punjab state, India Reet Kamal Tiwari, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering Department, said that these rocks are very weak in terms of heavy rains. However, there are similar aspects in many areas of the Himalayas. This is the reason why it is a bit difficult to ignore such parts. But such slopes can be made safe through the right methods of stability. It has also been said in the study that tectonic activity has worked to weaken the strength of the rocks by creating a bend. According to this study, roads were widened by removing vegetation and cutting soil and rock, which made the slopes unstable.
Incidence of landslides will increase in future
He said that if the use of land continues to change according to the present time, then we will see an increase in landslides in the coming times. He also said that if the incidents of heavy rains continue like this, then many incidents of landslides will be seen in the Himalayan regions. Due to this, the possibility of heavy damage and death of people can increase.
