Churu. Anyone’s mouth starts watering on hearing the name of this sweet. The taste of the pedas made in Churu is different from all others. People living in European and Gulf countries are also crazy about its taste. Many years ago, Kumbharam Saini of Churu city learned this craft in Kolkata and his third generation has inherited this craft. It looks normal, but the taste of these pedas is such that whoever tastes it once becomes impressed. Its demand increases even more during the festival season. Manish Saini told that his grandfather Kumbharam Saini went to Kolkata for business, where in 1967 he learned the art of making pedas from Bengali artisans. After this, his grandfather came to Churu, first worked in the railways, but he did not like it, so he took a shop near the railway station and started making sweets.

Magic in the hands
Kumbharam Saini’s grandson Manish told that when his grandfather made pedas, people liked the taste a lot. Many people of the district started going to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Australia for work and they used to take pedas with them. In such a situation, people of these countries also liked these pedas. In such a situation, whenever someone comes to India, people of these countries ask them to bring pedas while returning. He told that this process is continuing continuously. Now every month pedas from the shop are being sent to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Australia.

Three types of pedas are made
Saini says that he makes three types of pedas, one is small which is used for worship, the second is big which is used for eating and the third is kesar peda which is specially made in winters. Manis says that more sweet is put in the small peda. For this, work starts at seven in the morning and continues till evening. About 50 kg of peda is prepared every day, but the situation is such that not even a single peda is left by evening.

Make mawa yourself
He told that outside mawa is not used to make peda. Saini told that the most important thing in peda is mawa, they do not trust outside mawa. They prepare it themselves with the help of artisans. Saini told that it is roasted well which enhances its taste.
