Anti-Vehicle Theft Squad (AATS) of South District reached the liquor smuggler with just an over speeding challan and caught the accused Abhimanyu red handed while smuggling liquor. Earlier, the police identified the tempo used by the accused in liquor smuggling through Automatic Number Plate Recognition System (ANPR).

The accused was smuggling liquor in many states. The accused is a resident of Akbarpura Mathura Road, Kharagpur village of Post Office Bandhan in Ambedkar Nagar district of UP. South District Police Deputy Commissioner Ankit Choudhary said that the team of AATS in-charge Umesh Yadav was assigned the task of curbing the supply of liquor from the border areas and taking strict action against those involved in such activities in the South District area.

Under the leadership of Inspector Umesh Yadav, the team of SI Deepak Mahala and others started identifying such vehicles through the ANPR system in which illegal liquor is being brought to Delhi from neighboring states. In this, movement of Abhimanyu’s tempo was found from Bandh Road, Sangam Vihar and other borders of Delhi during late night and morning hours. Through this system the police got the number of the tempo. Police say that the registration number would have led to its owner, but the police did not find evidence of illegal liquor. In such a situation, the police started investigating the details of the traffic challan. Police found out that this tempo was challaned for over speeding in Vasant Kunj in February.

After this, the police found challans of the same tempo deposited in January also. From the challan, the police got the mobile number of the current tempo driver and illegal liquor smuggler Abhimanyu. After this, on the basis of mobile surveillance, the police team arrested the accused Abhimanyu from Ring Road on 27 February. On checking the tempo, 6750 quarters in 135 cartons and 180 bottles of liquor in 15 cartons were recovered.

What is ANPR system?

Delhi Police has installed Automatic Number Plate Recognition System (ANPR) cameras in all the districts. A total of 35 cameras are installed in the entire South District. These cameras scan the number plate of every vehicle. After this they create a data base. From this data base, the police gets to know which vehicle has gone where and how many times. Apart from this, data of stolen vehicles is fed into these cameras through Zipnet. As soon as the stolen vehicle passes through these cameras, they send an alert to the police about the location of that vehicle.

According to South District Police officials, when a traffic challan is deposited, the mobile number of the person depositing it is written in it. When the police scrutinized the details of the recently deposited challan, the mobile number of the accused Abhimanyu was found. Two cases of Excise Act are already registered against Abhimanyu. Both these cases are registered in Delhi. Police are also investigating the UP records of the accused. He was smuggling illicit liquor for many years.
